Kipling plays bocce and other distractions

The Wild Wire

But first I need to...

If I were to open a school it would need to be called:

Rube Goldberg Centre for Life, Contentment, Happiness, Survival and Overall Wellness and Perhaps even thriving as well as academy for career coaching and vocational transitioning for those who find that simplicity is a word they can spell but not put into practice and it is by far not the only issue they deal with but it certainly has an impact on their day oh and don’t forget to include that this school includes having a family and time perhaps for a few pleasures and hobbies along the way

I’d call it “Rudyard Kipling’s Left Testicle” for the sake of brevity.

But first I need to learn more stuff.

And then I need to pay down some debts.

After that?

Well, I’m waiting to see what happens with the kids.

Once they’re gone?

Well, that’s a long time from now, so no point in starting.

Sound familiar?

How do you negotiate this?

Sometimes ‘but first I need’ is an excuse to be small.

Other times distractions are more important that the goal.

That’s a whole lot of silly to merely spray paint in someone’s face. I could have done that for them much more directly and easily. Perhaps that’s not the point.

Is the whole ‘But first I need to’ thing a distraction or is it the main course?

Do you Rube Goldberg Machine your life?

When is this a way to hide?

Sometimes this is a big ADHD thing.

It's a kind of bargain we strike up with grief. Instead of enduring the pain of doing that shit thing we really don't want to do, we don't merely get distracted. We create barriers, rules, impediments that come with a nutty internal monologue:

but first I need to... and once that's done, well then I'll be able to...

I've spent years in this holding pattern. I got paid. I accomplished things.

Sometimes we're working towards an ending.

Other times, it's a good idea to just delight in being alive.

When is it a way to delight in being alive?
